5 Reasons it might be time for a new headshot

A headshot is kind of like insurance.

You definitely need it. It works in the background. But it’s usually something you put off until you can’t anymore.

If any of these apply to you, it might be time to update your headshot:

Reasons you need a new headshot

1) New job

Recently promoted? Or perhaps you changed careers altogether? Your headshot should say something about your profession. For example, imagine a headshot for an attorney. You probably pictured a suit, neutral background color, and confident pose. Now imagine a headshot of a party planner. I’m willing to bet you pictured something different - perhaps a party dress, brighter colors, and a fun, outgoing expression.

You’ve probably heard the quote “dress for the job you want, not for the job you have.” This applies to your headshot too. Consider what job you want next - does your headshot align with that vision? Recruiters and hiring managers often look at candidates’ LinkedIn profiles, and you don’t want your headshot to give off a negative or unprofessional impression.

2) New look

Different hairstyle or hair color? Have you lost a noticeable amount of weight? Grown a beard? New work clothes? We all change our appearance over the years, and an updated headshot is a great way to show off your new look!

3) Your current headshot is less than ideal

You’ve seen bad headshots, and perhaps your current one violates one of these headshot no-nos: Obvious selfie. Poor lighting. Unflattering pose. Awkward smile. Distracting clothing. Unprofessional setting. Or the obvious group shot where you cropped everyone else out. No judgement here - but you can do better.

4) You hate your current headshot

This one should go without saying, but why present yourself to the world with a headshot that you hate? You should feel confident and happy to put your best face forward.

5) It’s been more than 3 years since your last headshot

Think how you interact with people online. Every day we communicate via email, social media, and websites and our conversations are accompanied by a little profile photo. Get noticed and be remembered with your best headshot ever!
